A journalist from China is getting praised for her remarkable fluency in Bahasa Melayu while covering the ongoing 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou

According to New Straits Times, Liang Liang, a journalist from Yunnan, confidently approached a group of Malaysian reporters covering the Games and conversed with them in fluent Bahasa.

"I got excited when I saw the tiger stripe attire. I knew at once that those wearing it must be from Malaysia.

"I immediately approached them and started conversing in Bahasa Melayu. It's very hard to practise the language here in China, because only a handful of people speak it," she told the local daily.

It was learnt that Liang Liang picked up the language during a one-year exchange student programme at Universiti Malaya

Even though she is back home, the student said she is still learning the language and has even been nicknamed Husna by her Bahasa Melayu lecturer at the Yunnan Minzu University.

She also admitted that she is a huge fan of veteran songstress Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and became more proficient in Bahasa Melayu by listening to Siti's music.

According to Liang Liang, many of Siti's songs are used as reference materials in her university course.

"I miss Malaysia. I miss the pasar malam (night markets), visiting them used to be my hobby. I especially liked the ones at SS2 and the one at Masjid Jamek," said the well-familiarised student.

"Malaysia is a very safe country with so many interesting places, such as Melaka, Penang, Putrajaya, and Port Dickson," she added.

According to Berita Harian, at the Asian Games this year, a total of 64 journalists are on duty to report on the Games in various languages.
