Sarawak's Kek Lapis Gets Featured In Popular 'Great British Bake Off' Show

Judge Paul Hollywood described the cake as "one of the most difficult" creations on the show.

The traditional Sarawak kek lapis made a special appearance recently on Britain's popular television baking competition – The Great British Bake Off

The theme was 'Festival Week' for this week's episode seven of Season 10.

It kicked off with a signature challenge where bakers had to draw inspiration from celebrations across the world.

In the Showstopper segment of the episode, contestants were expected to impress judges with their own take on the Malaysian multi-layered cake

Judge Paul Hollywood described the cake as "one of the most difficult" creations on the show, according to The Borneo Post.

Meanwhile, British host Noel Fielding explained that the cake "should display even and precise layers" and "be grilled", adding that it should form intricate patterns that run through it when cut.

They were not only required to showcase their creativity with a professional-looking cake but it also had to have outstanding flavour.

With expectations set, contestants were given four hours and fifteen minutes to complete the cake

One contestant, Steph Blackwell from Chester, England, was praised by judges for her 'Orange and Chai Spiced Revitalise Cake'.

Meanwhile, Geography teacher Alice Fevronia's 'Chocolate, Orange, and Salted Caramel Kaleidoscope Sarawak Style Layered Cake' was called "extremely neat", The Borneo Post revealed.

However, the star of the show was 20-year-old Henry Bird who impressed judges with his 'Elegant Present Box' version of the cake.

Sarawakian kek lapis is famous for its striking colours, shapes, and designs - the more complicated the design, the more tedious it is to make

Each layer is baked individually and cut carefully before it is arranged in strips to create a unique pattern.

It is traditionally served in Sarawak during special occasions.
