Malaysian Actress Fined RM1,000 For Eating Durian In Her Penang Hotel Room
According to the actress, she never knew durians were prohibited from being eaten in Malaysian hotels.
Have you ever lived in a household where you were forbidden to bring durian into your home, and told to eat it outside before coming in?
Yeah, this story is probably for you.
Malaysian actress Yumi Wong recently ran into some trouble with authorities at a hotel she was staying at in Penang after she consumed durian in her room, which was against the rules of the inn.
Uploading the screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation she had with one of her production crew members to her Instagram Story last Thursday, 12 January, Wong was asked if she had eaten durian in her room.
After responding that she did, a crew member informed her that she was to be fined RM1,000 for doing so.

In response to the message, Wong jokingly replied by stating that the durian was "very expensive", saying that she never knew durians were prohibited from being eaten in Malaysian hotels
According to further messages by the crew member, they were in contact with the hotel to ask if they would be okay with reducing the amount of the fine.
However, it has not been revealed at the time of writing as to whether the request was approved or not.
In a report by Hub Pages, it is illegal to eat durians in public places, which include public venues and modes of transport, due to its 'repulsive' smell.
While the incident is a sharp reminder to Wong about the rules of consuming durian in Malaysia, all Malaysians can retain the same thought process most of us were taught as kids when eating the fruit: have it outside.
