A 24-year-old fresh graduate has gone viral for buying her dream car, a BYD SEAL Premium, on a RM2,500 monthly salary

In a Threads post last Thursday, 20 February, @carmensbaeisfood announced that she purchased the electric vehicle (EV) entirely with her own money, with her mother acting only as the guarantor for the loan.

She said most people were shocked when they found out she owned an EV worth RM180,000.

However, Carmen said she did not want to regret not owning her dream car while she was still young, which ultimately led to her decision.

"I don't want to have regrets when I grow old. I believe I will have the ability to purchase my dream car in the future, but I am positive that I will regret not buying myself a BYD SEAL when I look back on life," wrote the therapist, who works with people with autism.

Speaking to SAYS, Carmen revealed that she paid RM31,000 as a down payment without her parents' assistance

She graduated with a degree in Psychology on a full scholarship and worked as a full-time translator after leaving university.

She earned between RM4,000 and RM5,000 a month, with her highest pay reaching RM9,000. She said she wanted to save money for her Master's in Clinical Psychology.

Currently, she aims to gain experience as a therapist before opening her own private practice, possibly specialising in special needs children.

The 24-year-old also holds three separate freelance jobs that provide her with extra income. One of these is her previous translator job, which she now does part-time.

She also gets paid as a food reviewer on her TikTok and Instagram accounts @thefoodiegeng.

"Lastly, it is tuition. I teach English to Chinese on my off days, Thursday and Friday," said the diligent woman.

Carmen mentioned that she pays between RM1,600 and RM1,700 monthly for her car, and she aims to settle the repayment within seven years, as it is a flexible loan

When asked whether her parents were supportive of her purchasing the BYD SEAL Premium, she answered no.

"They do not really like EVs because they are worried about the speed and the availability of chargers outside.

"They think that for my first car, I should not buy such an expensive one. Previously, I drove a Picanto that my parents bought me. But I told them that I will be responsible for everything, including the down payment, insurance, wear and tear, electricity bills, coating, tyres, etc.

"I also mentioned that owning this car would motivate me since I am likely to work harder to earn more, given that I have freelance jobs where working more means earning more," she said.

Regarding the negative comments she received after announcing her big-ticket purchase on Threads, Carmen said she appreciates everyone's input, fully acknowledging that the purchase may not have been her wisest decision.

"But I believe that it is going to make me better because even if I fall, it will be a lesson for me," said the therapist.
