Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made a groundbreaking announcement today, 14 July, revealing that electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla has chosen Selangor for its Malaysian headquarters

Anwar, who held a virtual meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk this morning, welcomes the latter's interest and decision to invest in Malaysia, adding that Musk is willing to visit Malaysia soon.

In a statement, he congratulated Tesla and offered his government's support in opening the EV manufacturer's Malaysian headquarters, which will consist of a service centre and brand experience centre.

The decision marks a significant milestone for both the automotive industry and the country's economic development, as it's expected to bring numerous benefits to the local economy.

The company's presence will create employment opportunities for Malaysians and stimulate growth in the automotive and related industries. Additionally, the Prime Minister said that Malaysia will continue to strengthen its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions as early as 2050.

Anwar also announced that he and Musk touched on using the SpaceX satellite network to provide faster Internet speeds in rural areas

"We also discussed SpaceX's participation with the Starlink satellite service which can contribute to faster and wider Internet coverage, especially at the interiors, which only requires physical infrastructure and minimal land to increase the global Internet network,” Anwar said in his statement.

According to Anwar, this initiative involving the Starlink satellite network will increase Malaysians' capacity and well-being, especially in terms of education and potential for agriculture technology and generating income.

Meanwhile, in the virtual meeting today, Anwar was joined by SpaceX senior director Lauren Dreyer, Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
