The police are currently looking for two suspects who drove away a BMW without settling a RM38,000 bill for car upgrades at a workshop in Taman Setia Tropika, Johor Bahru

According to a statement by the Johor Bahru Utara police, one of the suspects, a 40-year-old man, left his car at the workshop on Saturday, 7 September, for servicing that was estimated to cost RM38,000.

The New Straits Times reported that the vehicle was fitted with new tyres, sports rims, and other accessories.

Johor Bahru Utara police chief ACP Balveer Singh said the customer then returned to the workshop on Tuesday, 10 September, with a friend to pick up the car.

The workshop mechanic suspected something was amiss when the customer insisted on test-driving the car before paying

"The complainant instructed his staff to accompany the customer because he was worried that he would run away," said the police.

During the test drive around Taman Bukit Kempas, the customer complained about a loud noise coming from the boot and asked the employee to check it.

When the worker opened the car boot, the customer's accomplice sprayed him with pepper spray, and the two fled with the car.

Balveer said the workshop mechanic, who witnessed the incident, attempted to stop the suspects by clinging to the car's side mirror at a traffic light junction but was knocked off.

Meanwhile, another workshop employee gave chase on a motorcycle, but was hit by the fleeing BMW.

The police said the three workshop employees were injured while trying to stop the runaway car

The workshop mechanic suffered an elbow injury, another employee experienced eye irritations due to the pepper spray, and the third employee fractured his arm and injured his knees and wrists.

The total damage from the incident is estimated to be about RM43,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 324 for voluntarily causing harm with dangerous weapons, and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspects involved are encouraged to contact investigating officer ASP Nazarul Izwan Abdul Manaf at +6019-3811817.
