Since last week, thousands of people across eight states in Malaysia have been affected by the floods caused by the monsoon rain
According to a report by New Straits Times published today, 21 December, the floods have displaced about 66,939 individuals.
The victims are now taking shelter at 466 temporary relief centres (PPS) in Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur.
The number of people affected by the floods could be bigger, as some victims have chosen not to leave their inundated homes.
Although authorities have taken steps to help victims, many everyday Malaysians, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and even companies have risen to the challenge to help stranded victims.
On Twitter, netizens commended a handful of brands for lending a helping hand at short notice, with many of them pledging to pay a visit to their businesses once they get through the storm.
Here are seven brands that have offered assistance to flood victims in this trying time:
1. Sunway Lagoon
On the second day of the floods on Saturday, 18 December, a netizen asked whether Sunway Lagoon — an amusement and water theme park some 14km away from Shah Alam — could provide some floats to help flood victims.
In response, Sunway Lagoon replied on Twitter with photos of what they had provided to help rescue efforts.
"Stay safe guys! We're here for you," the company wrote.
The photos show a boat, boxes of what seem to be clothes, and umbrellas, among other essentials.
2. Air Selangor
With water treatment plants being shut down due to the floods, Air Selangor has gone out of its way to help flood victims by not only mobilising water tankers to PPS, but also providing bottled waters to flood victims.
In many of its communications to the public, Air Selangor said it will be supplying reverse osmosis (RO) water to the affected areas during the unscheduled water supply disruption period.
3. Decathlon Malaysia
In light of the floods, Decathlon Malaysia said over the weekend that it will temporarily cease the sales of inflatable kayak boats, stand up paddles, paddles, and life jackets.
In its Instagram Highlights, Decathlon Malaysia said the move is to allow official NGOs and the Malaysian authorities to fully utilise the crucial items.
Following that, the sporting goods retailer received appreciation from Bangi member of parliament (MP) Ong Kian Ming, who had used its kayak to get into Taman Sri Muda to carry out rescue missions.
Free Malaysia Today reported that Ong kayaked solo to the Shah Alam area to help flood victims as he is "an experienced kayaker".
4. PETRONAS
While the government had on Monday night, 20 December, announced that it will be allocating RM100 million to help victims repair their homes with each household receiving a one-off payout of RM1,000, PETRONAS had on Monday afternoon said that it will be contributing RM25 million towards relief efforts.
Other than the colossal sum, the oil and gas company is also providing temporary accommodation, meal allowances, and financial assistance, among others, to its employees affected by the floods.
5. Prima Pharmacy
A netizen commended Prima Pharmacy yesterday for donating a box of paracetamol while they were out to buy medicine for flood victims.
The independent pharmacy is located at Sungai Merab Luar, Kajang.
6. Perodua
It is no secret that many vehicles were stranded in floodwaters when the rain started pouring over the weekend.
To help Perodua car owners mitigate some of the damages caused by the floods, the local car manufacturer is currently offering free tow service of up to RM100.
Harian Metro reported that Perodua is also offering free inspections for owners of Perodua vehicles affected by the floods.
"Besides, Perodua is also offering a 20% discount on selected spare parts to Perodua owners whose vehicles were damaged due to floods," it said in a statement.
While some of its service centres were affected by the floods, its chief executive officer Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said its customers can refer to any of its other branches throughout Malaysia for assistance.
7. FamilyMart Malaysia
On Sunday evening, FamilyMart Malaysia said it will be providing 20,000 food items, such as onigiri and sandwiches, to flood victims.
It said it will work with NGOs to distribute the food items.
