A family home in Hulu Langat, Selangor has been washed away by floodwaters over the weekend, leaving only a concrete staircase at the location

According to New Straits Times, the house is located in Batu 18, Kampung Jawa.

56-year-old Rodiah Mahfuz said it was her eldest sister Rohana Mahfuz who informed the rest of the family that the water was rising at their ancestral home on Saturday midnight, 18 December.

As the water level rose, villagers advised Rohana to vacate the house and take shelter at the home of a close family member.

Malaysiakini reported that Rohana moved some of the important items to higher ground following her neighbours' advice.

"Kak Long (Rohana) moved her car to slightly higher ground and she was also able to move some important items to a safer place," Rodiah said

"But then Kak Long realised that the water level had already reached where the car was parked," the younger sister told Malaysiakini.

"When she wanted to move her car again the residents there advised her to immediately get going because the water level was rising rapidly."

The next thing they knew, their entire house had been washed away

"Only the staircase is left. All other items in the house could not be saved, including important documents such as her MyKad," Rodiah related.

"Whatever it is, we are relieved that Kak Long is safe."

Rohana's relative had confirmed with her that their house had been swept away by the floodwaters with only the staircase left, reported New Straits Times.

The house was built in 1969 and it was left behind to eight siblings as family inheritance.

75-year-old Rohana lived in the house alone after their parents passed away.

Photos online show that the exterior of the house was not just built entirely with wood, and there were concrete pillars and ceramic roof tiles to reinforce the stability of the building.

In the past, the house had been damaged by floods, but the family had never experienced anything like the storm over the weekend.

Rodiah said the siblings wish to build a new home for their eldest sister before Hari Raya Aidilfitri next year as it is where they gather for the celebration every year, reported Malaysiakini.
