An engineer in China is going viral for proposing to his then-girlfriend in the most eccentric manner — with a ring made out of cement

Yao Guoyou is an engineer-cum-inventor who had one of his inventions used at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics arena.

According to the South China Morning Post, the 36-year-old is an outstanding alumnus of China's prestigious Tsinghua University.

He has around 60 patents to his name while serving as a corporate representative to 15 companies.

Yao invented material made out of nanosilicon ion to increase the waterproofing quality and lifespan of building materials

He invented the material when he was a doctoral student at Tsinghua University's School of Civil Engineering between 2011 and 2016.

The material was then sprayed on China’s South-to-North Water Diversion Project alongside other hydraulic engineering projects.

His invention won him the Tsinghua Qihang Scholarship Gold Award in 2016.

It was during the award ceremony he proposed to his girlfriend with a cement ring that was sprayed with the nano silicon ion he had invented

Yao went on to found Guardex in 2017, which specialises in creating cement waterproofing materials.

It was so successful that his invention was used on the National Speed Skating Oval that was specially built for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

"The ring suggests that our love will not corrode or degenerate in 100 years," Yao said when proposing to his now wife.

While many found Yao's gesture romantic, others called it "cheap and insincere"

On Douyin, netizens even dubbed him "cement brother" for giving his then-girlfriend the unusual ring.

However, there were also many who praised Yao for his unique way of expressing his love to his wife.
