When asked on what would be the best future for Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB), Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that the government will consider selling the company if there's a good offer

According to Bernama, Mahathir said that the government will first ensure that the potential buyer is capable of managing the local airline company.

He was speaking at a session entitled ‘The Future of Malaysia and ASEAN’ with the chief international correspondent, Southeast Asia, Bloomberg Television Haslinda Amin.

The event took place at the Bloomberg ASEAN Summit in Bangkok, Thailand on Friday, 21 June.

Mahathir added that the government will have to be very careful when it comes to choosing the potential buyer

"We have changed their (Malaysian Airlines) leadership many times, each time we were hoping they would do something to turn around the company but they failed... (so) now we want to sell it, but if we sell (it) to people who will fail again, it is not worthwhile," said Mahathir as quoted by Bernama.

The 93-year-old Prime Minister also added that the government is looking into other options for the local airline company

Bernama reported that the options mentioned during the Bloomberg ASEAN Summit include undertaking another restructuring exercise or cash injection by the government.

"Maybe changing the head once again and maybe restructuring or pumping a little of (the) government money and things like that, there are so many options at large," the Prime Minister said.
