The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, has consented for the state assembly to be immediately dissolved to allow elections
In a Facebook post today, 22 January, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said that he has signed the dissolution notice after granting an audience to Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad.
Hasni is a member and state chairman of Johor of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the main component party of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition in the Federal government.
The dissolution comes after weeks of speculation and calls from UMNO leaders for fresh polls.
An election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution
As per calculations, this means the Johor elections must take place on or before 23 March.
Johor will be the third state to hold an election in less than six months after Melaka and Sarawak went to the polls in November and December last year, respectively.
