Malaysia's vaccination rate has surpassed Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, said National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin

According to Malay Mail, this rate includes individuals who have received at least their first vaccine dose.

"Although this is not a race, it is good for us to benchmark our performance," he said at a joint press conference with Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow after visiting the new SPICE Arena vaccination centre in Bayan Lepas on Thursday, 3 June.

"And in terms of daily injection rate, I have asked for it to be constantly improved from day to day."

Khairy, who is also the Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister, said the government has set a target of giving out 150,000 vaccine shots per day by June

He hopes to increase the target to 200,000 shots per day by July.

Khairy said the target can be achieved through the establishment of more vaccination centres, including 1,000 private clinics nationwide as well as several more drive-through systems.

On his visit, Khairy also said the SPICE Arena vaccination centre would be used as an AstraZeneca vaccination centre in Penang starting 7 June.

Meanwhile, Chow said Penang needs to provide 9,000 to 10,000 vaccine shots daily to achieve its herd immunity target by October this year.

On 3 June, Malaysia hit a daily vaccination record of 117,563 doses administered in a day

It has been exactly 100 days since the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme began on 24 February, tweeted the Special Committee On COVID-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV).

"This number will continue to increase," it said.

As of 3 June, a total of 2,208,016 individuals in Malaysia have received the first dose, while 1,122,420 individuals have completed the two-dose COVID-19 vaccination.

This brings the number of total doses administered to 3,330,436.

According to Our World in Data, that means 3.5% of the Malaysian population who are eligible have been fully vaccinated.
