Last week, a flight was forced to return to its departure point after a passenger's midair diarrhoea accident affected the entire plane

The incident unfolded approximately two hours after a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Barcelona took off, prompting the pilot to contact air traffic control and request permission to return to Atlanta.

"It's just a biohazard issue; we had a passenger who had diarrhoea all the way through the plane, so they want us to come back to Atlanta," one of the pilots onboard the DL194 flight was heard explaining the situation to air traffic control, as recorded by an audio streaming site called LiveATC.com.

You can listen to the audio below:

The flight returned to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where maintenance crews spent five hours cleaning, decontaminating, and replacing the aisle carpet ruined by the messy trail of diarrhoea

According to The Guardian, passengers, including the individual who experienced the severe diarrhoea, were eventually allowed to re-board the flight after an eight-hour delay. They successfully reached Barcelona on Saturday afternoon, 2 September, without encountering any additional issues.

One social media user, who was on the same flight with his wife, praised the pilots' decision to return and commended the ground and flight crew for their response in cleaning up the situation.

Another user, who had heard about the incident from his partner travelling to Barcelona that day, described the scene as "pretty bad". He recounted the unpleasant odour and the use of vanilla-scented disinfectant, which — according to his partner — only had the effect of making the plane "smell of vanilla sh-t".

Meanwhile, a video taken by a passenger onboard shows brown substances on the aisle carpet, with paper towels placed on top:

Delta Air Lines, in a statement, blamed an "onboard medical issue"

The airline acknowledged the delay and inconvenience caused to passengers and emphasised that their teams worked diligently to clean the aircraft and ensure the safe continuation of the journey. However, the statement did not provide specific details about the incident itself.
