Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as "Hitler" who is "richer" and has more Western support

"There is no difference between the actions of Netanyahu and Hitler," the New Straits Times reported Erdogan as saying.

"He (Netanyahu) is richer than Hitler. All kinds of support comes from the West and the United States," Erdogan added.

Erdogan also condemned Israel's response to Hamas' 7 October raid, which killed over 1,000 Israelis and took 250 hostages, calling it a "terrorist state" and Hamas a "liberation group".

In return, Netanyahu accused Erdogan of "genocide" against the Kurds and "imprisoning" journalists in his own country

"Erdogan, who is committing genocide against the Kurds and who holds the world record for imprisoning journalists who oppose his regime, is the last person who can preach morality to us," a statement from Netanyahu read.

Netanyahu also defended Israel's army, which he said was "fighting to eliminate" Hamas, a "brutal terrorist organisation" that committed "crimes against humanity".

Israel's offensive in Gaza has killed over 21,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and wounded more than 55,000.
