On Monday, 27 December, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong announced the launch of the new Rapid KL My50 unlimited travel pass
According to Malay Mail, the minister said the RM50 pass will effectively replace the current My30 pass that was introduced under the National Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA) in June last year.
The new pass, only eligible for Malaysian citizens, will be sold starting 1 January 2022.
The My50 pass provides unlimited rides on all services operated by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, which include LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT, Rapid KL buses, and MRT feeder buses within the Klang Valley for 30 consecutive days.
The news was not welcomed by social media users, who questioned the price hike especially so soon after flash floods inundated the city
However, according to Wee's press conference, the all-access monthly pass is still being subsidised by the government
Wee said the new My50 pass was made possible with a RM115 million allocation under the National Recovery Plan (NRP) announced this year.
"Normally, a monthly pass would be valued at RM200. When we offer subsidised unlimited travel passes, this would mean that RM50 would be paid by the people, and RM150 [would be] taken care of by the government," he said, as quoted by theSundaily.
He said the pass "proves the ruling coalition cares about public welfare, especially in these trying times in line with the aspirations of Keluarga Malaysia" and expects it to help increase passenger traffic.

The My50 pass will also be applicable for those using Rapid Penang's bus services, but it will be known as Pas Mutiara
Wee added that although the sales of My30 passes ends on 31 December, those who have made advanced purchases may continue using their passes until 30 January.
Otherwise, the My50 unlimited travel pass will be available for purchase from 1 January 2022.
