Paper Parking Coupons Will No Longer Be Sold In Penang Starting January Next Year

All Penang drivers should start downloading the Penang Smart Parking app.

Penang has decided to stop selling paper-based coupons from 31 December this year

City councillor Gooi Seong Kin gave this reminder at the Penang Island City Council full meeting this week, reported The Star.

However, any stock a driver has left will be valid until the end of December next year.

Motorists and visitors in Penang have been urged to download the Penang Smart Parking (PSP) app

The PSP system, which was introduced in August this year, is the first smart parking system in Malaysia.

It covers both the Penang Island and Seberang Perai city councils and requires all users to pay for parking via a smartphone app, reported Free Malaysia Today.

According to Malay Mail, the installations of sensors at all 36,000 parking lots in the state will notify PSP app users about the availability of parking bays.

Those unable to make online transactions to top up credits into the app can buy PSP e-coupons from council-appointed agents

There are five official agents where motorists can buy the e-coupons from, other than the council itself.

They are 7-Eleven, Happy Mart, Yang Agency, PH Ocean, and Jefferson.

"The e-coupons will have codes for users to punch into the app to top up their credits," Gooi said.

The parking rates will remain the same despite the introduction of the smart parking system

The parking rate will remain at 80 sen per hour on the island and 40 sen per hour on the mainland.

The chargeable parking hours will be from 8am to 6pm every day, except on Sundays and public holidays.

Here are other changes that are going to be rolled out beginning January next year:
