With the guidance of their handlers, the new personnel showed off their fearless skills in several demonstrations

The police are confident that the new force will help in preventing and controlling crime at the popular tourist destination

"My men had tabled this idea of setting up the K-9 Unit two years ago," said the IGP at the ceremony.

"We saw the need to have the police dogs to support our police force here as Langkawi is famous all over the world."

The IGP also announced that the force will continue to enlist more dogs to the K-9 unit around the country

Malaysia currently has 118 trained K-9 handlers and 72 active dogs.

"We have 45 less active, semi-retired dogs, so we have plans to add more dogs to the unit," said Abdul Hamid.
