On Friday, 16 December, more than 20 teachers from SJKC Mun Choong in Kuala Lumpur and their family members became victims of a landslide at an organic farm in Batang Kali, Selangor

The tragedy shocked the nation as it became one of Malaysia's worst landslide incidents since the Highland Towers collapse in December 1993.

According to the Public Works Department (JKR), an early inspection performed by its forensic team discovered an active underground water stream at the site that runs beneath the campsite area, which is confirmed to have caused the tragedy, reported Free Malaysia Today.

In response to the tragedy, several Malaysians gathered at the school yesterday, 18 December, and constructed a memorial altar

Those who paid a visit to the school were seen carrying bouquets of flowers, which were placed in front of the school's main gate and signboard.

Some were also seen paying their respects to the landslide victims and praying in front of the school.

As of this writing, 24 people have been confirmed dead due to the Batang Kali landslide, with nine still missing. Rescue missions are still underway and will enter their fourth day today, 19 December.
