A Sun Bear Has Been Caught In Terengganu Just A Week After Sightings Of Orcas And Tigers

However, there are still two more sun bears on the loose.

First there were orcas, then a tiger.

Now, sun bears are roaming around Terengganu.

Bernama reported that the three bears were spotted in Felda Belara three weeks ago, which forced residents to contact the Terengganu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for assistance.

After Perhilitan laid traps for the sun bears, one was finally caught on Monday, 22 July, at 9.30pm.

The sun bears had spent weeks roaming the village, feasting on coconuts, jackfruits, and honey

76-year-old Mustaffa Tahir had lost 19 stingless bee (known as 'kelulut') hives and six coconut trees due to the sun bears' feasting, amounting to RM12,000 in losses.

Another resident, Noriah Abdullah, suspects that the sun bears are part of one family.

"One was quite huge while the other two were smaller-sized," she told Bernama.

The captured sun bear will be released into its natural habitat in Taman Negara after it undergoes a health check by the Veterinary Services Department, said State Perhilitan Director Dr Abd Malek Mohd Yusof.
