[PHOTOS] Woman Makes Soup With Her Pet Koi Fish After They Accidentally Died
She said they taste like ikan patin.
A Malaysian woman caused quite a stir online after she shared photos of her dead pet koi being turned into fish soup
The woman from Sabah, Amanda Omeychua, recently made a post on popular Facebook group 'Masak Apa Tak Jadi Hari Ini', which included a photo showing over 20 of her precious Japanese koi lying dead on the floor.
She shared that the koi had sadly died after her maid forgot to turn off the water supply to their pond, resulting in low oxygen levels that suffocated the fish.

Making the best out of the tragedy, Amanda decided to cook them for dinner to not be wasteful
"A traditional recipe for royalty. It tasted like ikan patin (silver catfish),” wrote Amanda, adding the hashtags #drownedkoi and #MCOsoup.
More photos showed that she had measured the fish, chopped them up into pieces, and cooked them in a large black pot, complete with ginger, lemongrass, and other aromatics.

As it is not widely known that these expensive, colourful fish can be eaten, Amanda's post gained a lot of attention
At the time of writing, her viral post has garnered over 10,000 likes and 4,500 comments.
Many Facebook users commented that it was their first time hearing that koi were safe for consumption.
"Never knew that carps or koi could be eaten. Always thought they were just for decoration in the ponds," said a Facebook user.

Despite so, many others said they wouldn't be able to bring themselves to eat these fish.
"I couldn't, they're too cute, said a netizen.

Meanwhile, there were also some users who said it was not too uncommon and shared their own experiences eating koi.
"I've eaten them before. But I don't think they're delicious, their meat is bland. My mum cooked them in a curry when my dad's fish died," a netizen said.
