The Prisons Department has called fake news on a social media post implying that VIPs such as former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be locked inside a jail cell with hotel-like amenities

In a Facebook post this morning, 24 August, the Prisons Department denied that the convicted politician would be given special treatment.

"Stop spreading false information," the department said in the caption of a photo allegedly showing the "jail cell for VIP".

The photo shows a room with a television hanging on the wall and multiple bookshelves. A black box resembling a mini refrigerator can also be found in the room, which comes with an ensuite bathroom.

Earlier, a Facebook post carrying the photo went viral for claiming that jail cells for VIPs come equipped with air-conditioning and Internet connection

"The daily food and drink costs of VIP prisoners are not the same as ordinary prisoners or civilians," the post claimed.

"Food and drinks for an ordinary prisoner cost RM30 per day. Maybe for a VIP prisoner, it can reach RM100 to RM150 per day."

The post, however, did not claim that the photo was of Najib's jail cell or a jail cell in Kajang prison

A check by SAYS found that the photo was taken from articles about the Champ-Dollon Prison in Switzerland on the Internet.

The Swiss prison is said to be one of the most luxurious prisons in the world.

According to local news portal SWI swissinfo.ch, the prison used to face crowding issues, but a new annexe was opened in 2011.

Reporters joined politicians to visit the hotel-like jail cells for the inauguration of the building that year.
