Some 100 protesters gathered in front of the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta on 30 January, throwing eggs at the building in protest over a recent shooting incident involving Indonesian nationals in Malaysia

The demonstration was sparked by a 24 January encounter in the waters off Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, where Malaysia Coast Guard (APMM) officers allegedly opened fire on a boat carrying five Indonesians.

The incident resulted in the death of a 50-year-old man, while four others sustained injuries.

Malaysian authorities claim the shooting was in self-defence after the individuals on the boat allegedly attacked officers with machetes and attempted to ram their patrol vessel, reported Harian Metro.

During the protest, demonstrators carried banners demanding justice and accountability from Malaysian authorities, calling for the arrest and prosecution of the APMM officers involved.

According to Harian Metro, the protesters also threw eggs at the embassy's entrance, covering parts of the building, including Malaysia's national emblem, with egg residue.

Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Malaysia to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident

The ministry expressed concern over what it described as the possible excessive use of force by Malaysian enforcement officers.

Meanwhile, Malaysian authorities have maintained that the APMM officers acted in response to an imminent threat posed by the individuals on the boat.

The incident has escalated diplomatic tensions between the two neighbouring countries, with rights groups and labour unions in Indonesia calling for firm action against those responsible.
