All Selangor F&B Outlets To Be Banned From Displaying Plastic Straws On Counters

New Straits Times reported that Selangor Environment, Green Technology, Science, and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian made the announcement on Sunday, 16 June.

The move comes after an approval by the State Executive Council (MMKN) to implement the policy on Wednesday, 12 June.

Hee explained that the policy is in line with the Selangor state government's campaign to reduce the use of single-use plastics.

Only one straw will be provided per drink ordered, reported Bernama.

Hee added that local authorities will update the Terms of Business License Application to include the ban, which restaurant operators are required to apply for when starting or renewing businesses.  

"The main objective of this policy is to educate and increase the level of awareness of residents in Selangor on the long-term impact of the use of plastic, in particular plastic straws, on health and the environment," Hee said, reported Bernama.

"The implementation of this policy is expected to help the government to control the increasingly significant environmental pollution and encourage recycling or reuse to maintain environmental cleanliness in Selangor," he added.

The public is also encouraged to give suggestions and opinions on the implementation of the campaign and policies regarding plastic use to any department and government agency, besides directly contacting the Exco office.
