The government has now decided to allow self-service laundrettes in the areas under Movement Control Order (MCO) to operate, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday, 14 January

According to Ismail Sabri, the self-service laundrettes, however, must ensure that an employee is present at the premises to monitor

"After much discussion, the government has decided to allow self-service laundrettes to operate, however, there must be a staff of the laundry present to monitor the situation," he said.

The Defence Minister said that this decision was taken because the government listens to people and their grouses on the need to use the laundry to wash and dry their clothes especially during the rainy season.

"The laundrette must provide temperature scanners, hand sanitiser, and the MySejahtera app," he stated, adding that the staff should monitor that people keep to the physical distancing measures.

Overall, it would be the laundrette's responsibility to control the number of patrons in the premise and that patrons abide by the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the Ministry of Health.

The laundrettes are allowed to operate from 6am to 8pm

"The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs will also conduct checks at the laundrettes to ensure that the public complies to the SOPs. If the owner was found to flout the SOPs and there was no staff to monitor the premise, the ministry will close the shop," Ismail Sabri added.
