17 guinea pigs were found abandoned with no food or water by the roadside around Sungei Tengah in Singapore last Thursday, 9 March

The Singapore Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said a passerby was shocked to find more than a dozen emaciated guinea pigs in two thermal food delivery bags left strewn on a stretch of grass by the side of the road.

"I went to check the bags because I saw something furry. I was shocked to see a guinea pig's face staring back at me!" said the individual who immediately called the organisation for help.

SPCA promptly sent an animal rescue officer to the scene to save the animals from the blatant neglect

"Abandoned with no food, water, and proper shelter, the guinea pigs had no chance of survival if not for the kind caller," said the society.

They added that the officer found 15 guinea pigs drenched and struggling in the sweltering heat and rain, of which, one was found dead, and two more were found the following day.

"We are incredibly saddened and disturbed by this incident.

"If you are unable to care for your pets because of personal reasons, it is your responsibility to find them safe homes. If you are still unable to do so, we urge you to seek the help of animal welfare groups like us," said SPCA.

The guinea pigs have since been taken to the society's Community Animal Clinic for medical checks, and are currently being fostered by volunteers

SPCA executive director Aarthi Sankar told The Straits Times that eight guinea pigs have been taken in by SPCA staff and volunteers, while another eight are being cared for by Guinea Pig Rescue Singapore until they are ready for adoption.
