Muar member of parliament (MP) Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has successfully completed his 200km protest run from Johor to Kuala Lumpur on Monday, 1 July

The former MUDA president initiated the run to protest the lack of funding that opposition MPs receive from the federal government to assist people in their constituencies, as well as to raise immediate funds for his Muar service centre.

He started the run on Friday, 28 June, at the Sultan Ismail Bridge in Muar, and pledged to run to the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur to urge the government to allocate funds to opposition MPs.

Syed Saddiq arrived at the entrance of the Parliament building at 9.30am yesterday, having raised RM160,000 online

"Alhamdulillah, the collection we received at the Muar parliamentary service centre has hit RM160,000. It's way beyond our RM100,000 target," he told reporters.

The former youth and sports minister also emphasised that his protest run was not a "hyperpartisan" push, but based on the principle of justice, where assistance should be given to all lawmakers regardless of political affiliation.

"If we look at it today, if you are in a government constituency for one term, you will get RM20 million, but in an [opposition-held constituency], there is basically none given to operate service centres, pay staff, and provide welfare assistance. All of this is nonexistent," he said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

"This is why this [protest run] is crucial, and I started this small effort in Muar first to demand this fair allocation," he added.

The last 5km of Syed Saddiq's run, from the KLCC LRT station to the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur, was also open to the public

Putrajaya MP Datuk Radzi Md Jidin and Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal were also seen joining the Muar MP for the last stretch of his run.
