UMNO Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has stated that students must be fluent in Bahasa Melayu (BM) to be accepted into matriculation programmes

The Merlimau assemblyperson said that fluency in BM should be one of the conditions for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement to provide Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) graduates with 10 A's and above a place in matriculation programmes at public higher education institutions, regardless of race.

"Ensure that all of them are required to be fluent in Malay," he said in a Facebook post.

For the record, Anwar's announcement did not include any such language requirements.

Additionally, Akmalproposed another condition of reserving an equal number of additional slots for Bumiputera students

"We agree with [Anwar's] proposal under the condition that an equal number of additional slots given to non-Bumiputera students must also be allocated to Bumiputera students.

"If the addition to the existing quota for 1,000 [non-Bumiputera students], then the same number must be added to the existing Bumiputera quota," read the statement posted yesterday evening, 1 July.

While racial quotas for admission to public universities were abolished in 2002, matriculation colleges maintain a 90% quota for Bumiputeras, with certain foundation courses exclusively reserved for them.
