"The ministry should think of a way to speed up the vaccination program, not delay it just because of the fasting month."

Muar MP Syed Saddiq has called on the government to hasten the process of vaccination in the country

The former youth and sports minister questioned the Ministry of Health's (MOH) recent announcement to not administer the COVID-19 vaccine at night during Ramadan.

According to Bernama, deputy health minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali said vaccine shots will be given as usual only until the evening as to avoid any disruption during the fasting month.

However, Syed Saddiq instead urged the ministry on his official Twitter account on Tuesday, 13 April, to "find ways to speed up the vaccination process for the people".

"If we delay the process because of the fasting month, or wait to donate blood 50 times first, when will we reach 80% vaccination for the people?"

The Muar MP said it is important for the vaccination programme to be carried out as quickly and thoroughly as possible

"Why does MOH use the excuse of Ramadan to limit the time for vaccination administration? Does it take that long for the citizens to get vaccinated?" he continued questioning in a Facebook post.

"Are Malaysians made up only of those who observe Ramadan?"

He also questioned how much longer should people wait, with the vaccinations being delayed.

As of 12 April, Malaysia has only fully vaccinated (given two doses to) 417,470 people since the programme started in February

For comparison, Syed Saddiq quoted Bhutan as an example. He said, "Bhutan successfully vaccinated 470,000 people in just nine days."

He urged the ministry to study how other countries effectively carried out vaccinations and distributed them.

"The ministry should think of a way to speed up the vaccination program, not delay it just because of the fasting month," he said.
