Over the past few days, netizens on Twitter have been discussing the relevancy of the Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) schools in 2023

Many argued that these schools have forgotten their main objective, which is to help brilliant students from lower-income families get proper academic opportunities.

Amidst the heated discussion, one Twitter user shared a story of how her employer managed to send their daughter to an MRSM school located in Johor.

According to them, the student is from a higher-income T20 family.

Despite getting accepted into the boarding school, the girl complained that she did not enjoy her time there.

The student told her family that she was frustrated that her classmates did not know who Harry Potter was

Aside from not knowing the popular Western fictional character, the girl also complained that her classmates were not able to speak English.

In response to the girl's grumbles, the Twitter user proceeded to tell their employer that MRSM schools are for smart B40 students, so it is expected that they would not know who Harry Potter was.

"I think she was taken aback. So, she tried to rationalise that some MRSM schools need T20 and M40 students in order to receive donations that would help upkeep the classrooms," they wrote.

The employer then told them that the particular MRSM school was considered low-tier, adding that it would be easy for her daughter to score at the top of her class.

The Twitter user added that they also have a colleague who's an MRSM school alumni, who admitted that her parents sent her there to save money even though they could afford it

"My colleague who's an MRSM alumnus and a high-ranking government servant's daughter chipped in saying it helped her parents who have [five] kids, and that ultimately [MRSM is] for Bumiputera," they wrote.

"I'm not sure whether they realised that they were not in need of financial assistance for education," they added.

Netizens were appalled by the unfair student intakes at MRSM schools, and left their thoughts in the comments section

One Twitter user said they had also met a few affluent MRSM students at competitions during their high school days.

"I was shocked to hear their stories, some are kids of pilots, some have parents with big businesses, and some travelled overseas several times per year.

"It's not shocking to see T20 kids at MRSM," they wrote.

"You know you're a T20 yet you send your child to MRSM. Don't you feel like you just took someone else's rights?" wrote another user.

"They were so triggered when you talked about this. Feeling entitled because they are [an] alumni," another user commented.
