Tiger Beer Denies Donating Funds Amid School Fundraiser Controversy
It said the donations were made by the community.
Tiger Beer has denied ever giving donations to schools following a recent controversy over a mock cheque bearing the beer brand's logo
The mock cheque, presented to Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Aiman Athirah Sabu at a fundraiser for SJK(C) Tche Min in Sungai Pelek, Selangor, sparked outrage from opposition party PAS, which questioned the appropriateness of alcohol-related sponsorships for educational institutions.
In response, the Education Ministry initiated an investigation into the matter, reiterating its strict guidelines against accepting donations from activities involving gambling, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.
Tiger Beer, in its statement, clarified that as an alcohol brand, it does not make any monetary contributions to the schools
"The Chinese Education Charity Concert (CECC) has been in existence for 30 years. Its mission is to be a platform for the local communities to help raise funds for upgrading Chinese school facilities.
"Our role in the CECC is solely in presenting local performing artists for the concert that is organised for the donors," the brand said, adding that it is only involved with the school's parent-teacher association and board of directors.
"To date, more than RM413 million has been raised by the local communities through the CECC platform, without any donations from our beer brand to the schools," read the statement.
The beer brand also stressed its commitment to respecting religious and cultural sensitivities, assuring the public that the organisers have always ensured that activities comply with local regulations.
