A female tiger has been beaten to death by angry villagers in India

The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh near the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) in India, as reported by Kosmo.

According to District Magistrate Vaibhav Srivastava, the tigress was lost and had walked into a village when dozens of villagers started surrounding the animal.

In a minute-long video recorded by one of the villagers, the group of men were seen beating and stabbing the tigress with long sticks and spears

Throughout the beatings, the animal lied on the ground crying in pain while trying to defend herself.

The villagers began to flee after forest officials arrived at the scene.

According to PTR field director H Rajamohan, the five to six-year-old tigress "sustained fractures and injuries on almost every part of her body," adding that the tigress suffered broken ribs.

A few hours later, the tigress succumbed to her injuries.

Police has since identified 31 of the villagers and arrested four of them

According to India Today, the police registered a First Information Report against more than 40 people yesterday, 26 July.

It was reported that the villagers were responsible for holding off the forest officials from attending to the animal which resulted in the delay. An investigation has since been ordered to verify the reason behind their delay.
