A Perodua Kancil caught on fire while its driver was refuelling it at a petrol station in Pasir Mas, Kelantan on Monday morning, 14 March

Sinar Harian reported that the incident occurred at about 8.35am and did not involve any casualties.

However, the owner of the vehicle was nowhere to be found.

Videos and photos of the incident have since been widely circulated on social media, with netizens speculating that the driver did not turn off his engine when pumping petrol as the cause of the fire.

Rantau Panjang Fire and Rescue Station (Bomba) chief Imran Ismail said the fire brigade received an emergency call about the fire from the public at 8.36am

"Six members were rushed to the location," he said, adding that upon arrival, the Perodua Kancil and the petrol pump next to it were engulfed in flames.

With two hose units, the firefighters were able to control and put out the fire in less than 10 minutes.

"Investigations found that the car was burnt up to 50% and its driver could not be found," he added.

The petrol pump that the car was using was also completely destroyed by the blaze. The value of the losses have yet to be determined.

While Imran added that the cause of the incident is still under investigation, the police suspect the driver was attempting to smuggle petrol to sell overseas, which led to the fire

According to Bernama, Pasir Mas district police chief ACP Mohd Nasaruddin M Nasir said initial investigations found a burnt plastic container in the car.

He added that a witness — an employee at the petrol station — claimed to have seen flames sparking from the bottom of the car while the driver was refuelling.

"The fire is said to have spread to the back of the car before the man fled. The witness also said there seemed to be no element of malice as a cause of the fire," said Mohd Nasaruddin.

The police chief added that they are currently tracking down a 36-year-old suspect from Kampung Lubok Gong nearby for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supply Act 1961 for unlawful possession of controlled articles.
