A video of a man allegedly abusing his dog on the balcony of a condominium unit in Kajang, Selangor, has gone viral on social media

The video was shared by non-governmental organisation, My Forever Doggo (MFD), highlighting the importance of community members speaking up on behalf of abused animals.

The animal NGO said a witness to the incident had taken a video and posted it to an animal rescue group on social media on Monday, 1 July, leading independent rescuer Shima Aris to intervene.

The short clip shows a man handling a dog aggressively on a condominium balcony and slapping it repeatedly.

In the post, MFD said the rescuer coordinated the retrieval of the dog from its alleged abuser with the help of the condominium management and several other parties familiar with the man

The man reportedly handed the husky over willingly to the rescuer on Tuesday, 2 July.

However, MFD said the alleged abuser later accused the rescuer of kidnapping his dog and filed a police report against her on the same day.

"As a result, the police have instructed the rescuer to either return the dog to the abuser or [hand it over] to the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS)," said MFD, claiming that the owner would be allowed to bring the dog home if it did not suffer physical injuries.

Currently, the dog is under the care of a veterinary clinic at the rescuer's insistence until matters are settled with the alleged abuser

In MFD's post, the rescuer added that DVS is investigating the purported abuse due to overwhelming reports made by the public, while the police are investigating her for the alleged kidnapping.

SAYS has reached out to the rescuer for an update regarding the case but has yet to receive a reply.

Meanwhile, MFD has called on the public to report cases of animal abuse on the DVS website and to always furnish as much evidence as possible to stop animal cruelty.
