A woman was shocked to learn her father cooked and ate his pet koi after an electricity short circuit killed his fish

Taking to Twitter, user @Nadia_Nazir said a power trip caused the water pump in their house pond to stop working, which resulted in two out of his four koi dying.

She expressed dismay that her father was willing to eat the fish that he was looking after, and was also surprised that koi were edible.

"There was a power trip at home and Papa's water pump stopped working for awhile," she said.

"Two of his koi fish died as a result and then he sent this photo. KOI BOLEH MAKAN KE? (Koi can be eaten?) WHAT IS THIS BEHAVIOUR, PA?" she exclaimed.

Nadia also shared a photo of the fish after it was carefully prepped and fried by both of her parents

"Mama said she did not want to clean the fish because she felt bad. So my dad gutted it, while she fried it," she explained.

"The strange thing is, she felt bad for having to gut it, but is okay with frying and eating it," she added, questioningly.

In a follow-up tweet later, she said her mother told her that the koi's flesh was sweet and that the fish were "slightly on the bony side, but overall she gives it a thumbs up".

The woman's post has since garnered over 700 retweets, with netizens sharing her dismay that her parents were willing to eat their pet fish

There were also netizens who were surprised that the colourful, expensive fish can be eaten, while others were unperturbed.

"It's a carp, so technically, yes, they can be eaten. But whether they're delicious or not, it's personal taste," said a Twitter user.

Another user shared, "My mum's koi fish died a few months ago and she could not bring herself to gut and eat the fish. So I cleaned it and fried it while she just watched the rest of us eat it."

Many netizens also shared that they have eaten other expensive pet fishes before, such as arowanas and flowerhorns, that have accidentally died.
