National sprinter Muhammad Azeem Fahmi ran the fastest 100m in history by a Malaysian athlete in a blazing 10.09 seconds yesterday, 1 August

The 18-year-old broke the national record by also coming in first in the last heat of the 100m event at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.

The previous national record was held by Khairul Hafiz Jantan with 10.18 seconds at the 2016 Malaysia Games in Kuching, Sarawak.

Azeem's win was also celebrated by the international athletics federation World Athletics, which praised the youth for shattering the national record at his age across their social media pages.

Azeem will be advancing to the semi-finals today, 2 August, as the second best among 60 sprinters in eight heats

He comes only behind Botswana's 19-year-old Letsile Tebogo, who also broke the championship record with a blistering 10.0 seconds during the third heat.

"I am happy to clock the second fastest time in the heats. I am on the right track to dip below 10 seconds," Azeem told New Straits Times' sports segment, Timesport, today.

In a now trending video of the event, the 18-year-old can be seen not being able to conceal his look of surprise as he crossed the finish line.
