The 24-year-old Lee Zii Jia will officially be the first professional shuttler to attend the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) joint training session at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

In a statement issued through the official Team LZJ Instagram page, the world's number two said that the decision was made as part of his preparation for next season.

"I'm already at work to prepare for next season and among them is humbly accepting the Badminton Association of Malaysia's invitation for independents to spar at the Academy Badminton of Malaysia (ABM)," he stated in the caption's post.

"The training environment and quality at the ABM remain the best in the country and this opportunity will surely benefit all parties, especially for future team events."

Meanwhile, Lee added that he will head to Taiwan for a training camp scheduled from 19 to 25 December with his main sponsor, Victor, and local players there.

Not many were expecting Lee to accept the BAM's invitation for the joint training, especially after he quit the national team to turn professional early this year

He even turned down the invitation to play for Malaysia at the Manchester Commonwealth Games.

However, Lee needs all the assistance he can get to improve his performance in the competitive men's singles category since he is now without a coach, due to Indra Wijaya's departure last week.

He hopes that the collaboration with BAM will help him prepare for the season-opening Malaysian Open from 10 to 15 January 2023, reported The Star.

The session is only eligible for professional singles shuttlers that are ranked in the top 50 and doubles pairs ranked in the top 30 of the Badminton World Federation (BWF)

According to Bernama, single players will have their session on Wednesday morning, while doubles players will have theirs on Wednesday and Friday mornings.

National singles coaching director Wong Choong Hann believes that the matchplay sessions would benefit both Lee and BAM players.

"I received a call from Lee's sister, Zii Yii last week about whether he can play on Saturday. They were okay with the request at first, but it will be on Wednesdays in the future," said Choong Hann.

"This session will surely benefit both sides. Lee played with all our singles players in that two-hour session. This is also good for our players because our juniors can also play against them."
