Pelé Passes Away After Battle With Cancer

He had been hospitalised for the past month and died of organ failure.

Legendary Brazilian football player Pelé died on Thursday, 29 December, at the age of 82

Pelé passed away at 3.27pm "due to various organ failures stemming from the progression of colon cancer related with his prior medical condition," according to the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he was receiving treatment, as reported by Reuters.

The football star, whose real name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, rose from poverty to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history.

He is the only player to have won three World Cups with Brazil in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

Pelé is also the first man to have ever scored 1,000 career goals.

The announcement of his death was made in a Facebook post, which has been flooded with messages of condolence and shared over 137,000 times, as of writing

"Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. On his journey, Edson enchanted the world with his genius in sport, stopped a war, carried out social works all over the world, and spread what he most believed to be the cure for all our problems: love," the post read.

"His message today becomes a legacy for future generations."

"Love, love, and love, forever."
