Apple isn't exactly known for revealing its experimental projects, but every now and then, something fascinating slips through the cracks

The latest? A Pixar-like robotic lamp dubbed ELEGNT that, while still a prototype, hints at a more expressive and engaging future for smart home technology.

According to Mashable, unlike the cold efficiency of most robots, ELEGNT doesn't just complete tasks — it reacts, moves, and even emotes.

Apple's Machine Learning Research team has been studying how users respond to expression-driven versus function-driven robots, and this little lamp is proof of concept.

When asked about the weather, Apple's ELEGNT turns towards a window before answering, mimicking human behaviour

It stretches before reaching across a desk, sways to music in the kitchen, and even slumps in apparent disappointment when left out of plans.

These expressive flourishes enhance user interaction, making the robot feel more intuitive and social.

While Apple hasn't confirmed any plans to commercialise ELEGNT, the company's broader push into home tech suggests this research could inform future products.

Bloomberg's tech journalist Mark Gurman reported that Apple is gearing up for a major expansion in smart home devices

This year alone, we expect a HomePad smart display, a refreshed HomePod mini, and a new Apple TV 4K.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple could introduce AI-powered smart cameras, video doorbells, and even a tabletop robotic assistant by 2026.

If Apple leans into the playfulness of ELEGNT, we could be entering an era where smart home devices don't just work for us — they engage with us.

While not every gadget needs to dance to our playlists, Apple's experiments suggest a future where AI-powered home devices feel less like tools and more like companions.
