Google will soon display detailed AI-generated summaries whenever you search for specific questions

At its Google I/O event on 14 May, 2024, the tech giant revealed that these will be the biggest changes to Google's search engine since its introduction 25 years ago.

Google chief executive officer Sundar Pichai said the new feature, 'AI Overviews', is set to revamp the way we search on the world's largest search website.

"I’m excited to announce that we will begin launching this fully revamped experience, ‘AI Overviews,’ to everyone in the US this week," he announced at Google I/O, adding that it will be rolled out in stages across the world in the coming weeks.

AI Overviews is designed to help people looking for quick answers to specific and complex questions by piecing together multiple information

In a blog post, Google said the feature is useful for those who are researching, planning, and brainstorming.

"Sometimes you want a quick answer, but you don’t have time to piece together all the information you need. Search will do the work for you with AI Overviews," the post read.

The feature is made possible through Gemini's latest customised model for Google Search.

Websites with helpful and useful content stand to gain the most through AI Overviews, Google said

Google allayed fears that generative AI would reduce pageviews for organisations that rely on eyeballs to make money. Instead, it argued that its latest AI Overviews feature will help bring quality traffic to organisations.

"And we see that the links included in AI Overviews get more clicks than if the page had appeared as a traditional web listing for that query. As we expand this experience, we’ll continue to focus on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators," the post read.

You'll still see ads displayed across dedicated slots. Google said these ads will be labelled clearly for users to easily distinguish organic and sponsored search results.
