Google recently announced that it had laid off hundreds of employees

On 10 January, the tech giant revealed that the affected employes were from various teams, including engineering, Google Assistant, AR, and DSPA.

The company said it was investing in its biggest priorities and making organisational changes to become more efficient.

Contrary to Google's claims, the layoffs actually affected almost 1,000 people

According to the Verge, the total number of laid-off employees was more than Google's estimates.

Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman also left the company, Reuters reported.

Google said it is supporting the impacted employees as they look for new roles

This is not the first time Google had massive layoffs in January. Last year, it cut 12,000 jobs and offered generous severance packages to affected employees.

Google is not the only tech company laying off its employees

Many other companies, including Amazon, Pixar, Discord, Twitch, and more, have been on a layoff spree.

Various factors contribute to these layoffs, such as market shifts, cost-cutting, overhiring, and economic downturns.
