Nintendo fans were in for a delightful surprise as the Japanese video gaming giant dropped an early reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2

The unveiling comes months ahead of the platform's expected 31 March release.

Nintendo released a "first look" trailer on its official social media channels, showcasing how the new console stands out from its predecessor.

One of the most striking changes is the size — while Nintendo hasn't shared exact measurements, the trailer highlights a significantly larger form factor

A side-by-side comparison at the end of the reveal video highlights just how much bigger it is.

Another noticeable upgrade is the redesigned kickstand.

Unlike the flimsy strip on the original Switch, this one spans nearly the entire width of the device, appearing far sturdier.

The Nintendo Switch 2's dock has also been tweaked, now featuring rounded top corners

The Joy-Con controllers retain their signature snap-on functionality, but it's unclear whether they attach magnetically, as some leaks suggested.

There's now a proprietary connector on each side, presumably enhancing their interface with the main unit.

The controllers' colour accents have shifted, concentrating around the connector and below the analogue sticks, while the console itself sports a mostly black design. A revamped controller grip is also part of the package.

Nintendo has confirmed that most existing Switch games will be backwards compatible with the new hardware

However, a disclaimer notes that some titles may not be fully supported, though further details will only emerge later.

As for when players can get their hands on the Switch 2, the release window remains vague — 2025 is all Nintendo is willing to confirm for now.

A dedicated Nintendo Direct is scheduled for 2 April, alongside a series of global hands-on events, with availability varying by location.

The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal video also featured a potentially brand-new Mario Kart game

The video featured beloved Nintendo characters like Mario, Princess Peach, Link and more racing on never-before-seen tracks.

While Nintendo didn't specifically name the title of the new Mario Kart game, fans are hoping that it'll be Mario Kart 9.

The previous title in the series, Mario Kart 8, was released in May 2014. So an update is certainly due.
