JAKIM Confirms Ham And Cheese Sandwich Sold At KK Mart In UM Lacks Halal Certification
It was discovered that neither the sandwiches nor the manufacturing company had halal certification.
The Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) has clarified that the ham and cheese sandwiches sold at at KK Mart in Universiti Malaya and the manufacturing company that supplied them do not have halal certifications
Shake and Bake Café Sdn Bhd, the supplier of the ham and cheese sandwiches, previously stated that the sliced meat used was certified halal by JAKIM.
However, during a raid last Friday, 10 January, JAKIM discovered that neither the sandwiches nor the manufacturing company have halal certifications.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry also discovered that the halal logo on the packaging was from a certification issued to another company, which had ceased operations and sold its business to the raided firm.
The company's use of the Malaysian halal logo on the product label is an offence under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.
Legal action has been taken by KPDN, and consumers are advised to verify the halal status of products via the Malaysian Halal Portal or the Verify Halal app.
JAKIM explained that even if the sliced meat is halal-certified, the halal status does not extend to the whole sandwich
JAKIM director-general Sirajuddin Suhaimee stated that only products and services verified and certified by the department can be labelled as halal, reported FMT.
"Products can only be certified as halal by the authorised body once they comply with Malaysia's halal certification standards and procedures, which encompass the overall handling, preparation, and processing aspects," he remarked.
Sirajuddin urged business operators to remain vigilant and comply with legal provisions to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
