Six years of data and the same lesson goes unheeded: people are still using weak, easily crackable passwords according to NordPass' latest report

Once again, the usual suspects — "123456" and "password" — top NordPass’ latest annual study of the 200 most common passwords worldwide.

The 2024 report, compiled with NordStellar, analysed a massive 2.5TB of data pulled from public sources and dark web leaks.

The findings span 44 countries and reveal a disheartening truth: despite increasing awareness of cybersecurity threats, bad password habits persist.

According to NordPass, it takes hackers less than a second to breach the most common passwords.

The global top 10 most used passwords for 2024 include:

  1. 123456
  2. 123456789
  3. 12345678
  4. password
  5. qwerty123
  6. qwerty1
  7. 111111
  8. 12345
  9. secret
  10. 123123

Alarmingly, corporate accounts fare no better. These are the most used passwords at work:

  1. 123456
  2. 123456789
  3. 12345678
  4. secret
  5. password
  6. qwerty123
  7. qwerty1
  8. 111111
  9. 123123
  10. 1234567890

The same lackadaisical approach that keeps "123456" on top also leaves millions vulnerable to identity theft, data breaches, and ransomware

If your password is on these lists, it's time to act.

Always use a mix of characters, long and unique passwords, avoid common words, update them regularly, enable 2FA, and use password managers to ensure strong workplace security.
