There is something inherently grand and romantic about stepping into Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS

The hall promises an evening of world-class sophistication. Yet, when Broadway legend Lea Salonga took the stage alongside the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), the expansive splendour of the venue felt surprisingly, wonderfully intimate.

What could have easily been a grand, formal affair felt like a warm invitation into a family living room, albeit backed by a rich, multi-piece symphony orchestra.

The evening's charming magic stemmed from the delightful dynamic between Lea and the conductor for the night: her younger brother, Maestro Gerard Salonga

Serving as the MPO's Resident Conductor, Gerard arranged the musical numbers and led the orchestra with effortless precision.

Their onstage banter and natural chemistry added a cheeky, lighthearted joy to the performance. It was a warmth that radiated throughout the hall, making the audience feel as though we were in on a lovely secret.

Naturally, the Disney selections were absolute highlights of the night, receiving standing ovations from the audience.

Hearing the original singing voice of Princess Jasmine and Mulan revisit Reflection and A Whole New World made my heart sing. The sweeping Disney Princess Medley, which featured iconic tunes like Part of Your World and Colours of the Wind, transported the entire hall straight back to childhood wonder.

Beyond the world of animation, the setlist showcased Lea's formidable theatrical range:

  • The Miss Saigon Medley: A deeply moving tribute to the show that launched her international career.
  • I Dreamed a Dream (Les Misérables): A delicate, heartbreaking rendition that held the entire room in awe.
  • Defying Gravity (Wicked): A soaring, powerful performance that showcased her thrilling theatrical belt.
  • Pure Imagination / A Million Dreams: A whimsical opening combination that perfectly set the enchanting tone for the rest of the night.

By the time the final notes of Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody echoed through the hall, it was clear that the performance was far more than just a standard concert

It was a celebration of craftsmanship, family, and timeless storytelling.

Backed by the extraordinary talents of the MPO, Lea Salonga delivered an evening filled with warmth, nostalgia, and sheer musical brilliance. For everyone lucky enough to grab a ticket, it was an absolute delight from start to finish.
