What sets a good show apart from all the rest?

Many of the shows we grew up watching are truly unforgettable thanks to iconic talents whose appearance, charm and onscreen antics made these shows our all-time favourites.

We still remember these shows even now, years after they’ve ended! We have very fond memories of certain characters or hosts as truly iconic entertainers - the show wouldn’t have been the same without them!

This Christmas, witness the rise of one of the most iconic entertainers of all time, P.T. Barnum, whose true story will be brought to the big screen in 'The Greatest Showman'.

1. Gurmit Singh in 'Phua Chu Kang Pte. Ltd.'

We'll always remember him as: Everyone's favourite wise-cracking ah-beng with the iconic yellow boots and huge mole, Phua Chu Kang.

Iconic line: "PCK Pte. Ltd.! Best in Singapore, JB, and some say Batam!" / "Dun pray pray!" (a.k.a "don't play play) / "Use your brain!"

Fun fact: Gurmit Singh is actually an alumnus of Singapore's National Police Cadet Corps, where he held the rank of Cadet Inspector.

2. Jalaluddin Hassan of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'

We'll always remember him as: The suave host of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'. We'll never forget his super deep voice that always sent shivers down our spine.

Iconic line: "Adakah anda pasti? Jawapan anda...muktamad?"

Fun fact: He sent a massage chair to his current wife-to-be as part of the barang hantaran.

3. Azura Zainal of 'Disney Buzz'

We'll always remember her as: The fun-loving and bubbly host on 'Disney Buzz', every Malaysian kid’s favourite weekend show. We weren't even mad when the segments came on in-between our Disney shows marathon.

Fun fact: Azura loves extreme sports and has done stuff like scuba diving with sharks and climbing active volcanoes just to name a few.

4. Douglas Lim in 'Kopitiam'

We'll always remember him as: Steven, the hairSTYLIST-not-barber with an attitude and no shortage of savage comments on the hit local sitcom we super miss watching, 'Kopitiam'.

Fun fact: Douglas formed a band called Indecisive with Deana Yusoff and Chelsia Ng just to record 'Empty Decorations', the theme song for 'Kopitiam'.

5. Kanchana Devi in 'Puteri'

We'll always remember her as: The super blurcase on popular local sitcom 'Puteri' who cracked us all up with just how sesat she could be.

Iconic line: The many times she misquoted and messed up the meanings of various peribahasa.

Fun fact: She enjoys singing in the car with her children, especially to songs by Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and Anuar Zain.

6. Lydia Shum in 'Living With Lydia'

We'll always remember her as: The dim sum queen and typical Asian mother who never let any setbacks stand in her way on the hilarious sitcom 'Living With Lydia'.

Iconic line:
"Hi Billy Bong!" / "Shut up!"

Fun fact: Lydia lived in Vancouver, Canada for quite a long time after she got married. So when she passed away in February 2008, the then mayor of Vancouver proclaimed 1 June 2008 (her lunar calendar birthday of that year) as 'Fei Fei Day' (her nickname) in her honor.

7. Neil Buchanan of 'Art Attack'

We'll always remember him as: The best Pendidikan Seni teacher of all time.

Iconic line: "This is an Art Attack. This is an Art Attack. This IS Art Attack!"

Fun fact: Neil is a guitarist in a British heavy metal band called Marseille.

8. Ryan Seacrest of 'American Idol'

We'll always remember him as: Simon's worst enemy and eternal bickering partner on 'American Idol'.

Iconic line: "This...[epic dramatic pause] is American Idol!"

Fun fact: Not only is he successful as a host, he's also a producer of hit award-winning reality shows 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians' and Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution'.

9. Tyra Banks of 'America's Next Top Model'

We'll always remember her as: The fabulous yet totally down-to-earth mentor and host of 'America’s Next Top Model' who made us all wish we had a killer smize like hers.

Iconic line: "You wanna be on top?" *na na na na na naaaaa*

Fun fact: Tyra was the first ever African-American woman to be featured on the covers of both GQ and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

10. Steve Burns of 'Blue's Clues'

We'll always remember him as: The friendly host of 'Blue's Clues' who made us all really wanna visit his house and play with Blue.

Iconic line: "We just figured out Blue's Clues. We just figured out Blue's Clues. We just figured out Blue's Clues 'cause we're really smart."

Fun fact: He stepped down from his role on Blue's Clues in 2002 because he was starting to go bald and didn't want to be seen losing his hair on a kid's TV show.

11. Jeff Probst of 'Survivor'

We'll always remember him as: The one constant presence on 'Survivor', season after season, and the only person there who would be clean, well-rested, and well-fed.

Iconic line: "Survivors ready? GO!" / "The tribe has spoken."

Fun fact: At the end of every season of 'Survivor', he takes home the snuffer that is used to put out the contestants' torches when they're voted off as a souvenir.  

12. Phil Keoghan of 'The Amazing Race'

We'll always remember him as: The master at trolling contestants into thinking they're eliminated. And we were always super jealous of him for getting paid to travel around the world.

Iconic line: "You are the ___ to arrive!"

Fun fact: After a near-death experience during a shipwreck diving expedition when he was 19, Phil made it his mission to live life to the fullest and came up with a list of activities he wants to do before he dies, called the 'No Opportunity Wasted' (NOW) list.
