It's not everyday that you turn 13! In celebration of entering their 'teenage' years, the uber-urban JUICE Magazine are set to throw a birthday bash that promises to live up to its trendsetting brand

Drawing away from the usual mix of champagne showers and cake, the trendsetter magazine will be celebrating its 13th birthday with a seamless marriage of audio and visuals by a roster of tastefully curated DJ-producers and VJs:

1. XU

Be it with LapSap, Twilight Actiongirl, or on his own – Xu is a ubiquitous name in the nightlife scene and a seemingly perennial fixture since over a decade ago. The man has juggled the mainstream stage while still holding it down with quality house and techno choons – that is if he’s not busy making his own indie dance music with Jit Woei as Mini Compo.

2. Shelhiel

A reality show winner, Shelhiel transcends his pop background after discovering electronic music of the leftfield kind – but without abandoning his pop roots. Keen on the bouncy tunes of Jersey Club and the genre’s ilk, Shelhiel’s own production is similarly uplifting – the light to the otherwise sombre Akhyla collective. JUICE 13th Anniversary is set to be his DJ debut.

Bud Culture might not be around anymore, but bass music thrives in Kuala Lumpur thanks to Akhyla – VMPRMYTH’s indie label that has uncovered a multitude of self-made DJ-producers – one being his deck partner for the night; the Italo-Chinese Yahna. Expect dark, bassy reverberations not unlike The Glitch Mob.

4. Pradana

Malaysia-based Indonesian DJ-producer Pradana isn't a prominent name in the scene, but those in the know recognise him as a genre-savvy producer whose oeuvre has included everything from dubstep to grime and jersey club to city pop. Pradana had worked with VJ Uzair Sawal for VGA Fest before.

5. Zulamran Hilmi

Subang Jaya artist Zulamran frequently works with electronic acts and DJs in the local scene; from bedroom producer Adam Kasturi to Xu’s LapSap to underground club night Black808. Beyond that, he’s a dedicated VJ who will never be seen using a render or footage that he didn’t make himself. Minimal, clean, and geometrical shapes make the bulk of his visuals.

6. Syazwan

Part of the Akhyla collective-cum-label, Syazwan is both a musician and a visual artist. A relative unknown in the audiovisual scene – whose preferred identity as a visual artist is exactly that, ‘Unknown’ – Syazwan was personally recommended to us by Zulamran Hilmi. It’s easy to see why from a cursory look at his portfolio, they share the same affinity for post-internet art. The night will be Syaz’s big debut.

7. The Tomoe

Headed by TKI, The Tomoe is a collective specialising in the visual arts; interactive installations, 3D modelling, graphic design, illustrations, and the audiovisual experience. With nightlife credentials in their work with Detour Asia for the likes of Phon.o, Perera Elsewhere, and Sauce81, it’s only fitting that The Tomoe will be handling all of the in-house installations at the 13th Anniversary Party.
