Jean Todt, husband of Malaysian Oscar-winning actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, has revealed why the couple remained engaged for 19 years before finally getting married in July 2023
During a recent interview with dancer and TV personality Jin Xing, Todt, a retired French motorsport executive who led Ferrari's Formula 1 team during Michael Schumacher's championship-winning years, explained that their nearly two-decade engagement was due to both his and Yeoh's demanding work commitments.
The couple first met on 4 June 2004 in Shanghai, China, where Yeoh was attending a Ferrari event as part of a publicity appearance.
Todt was immediately drawn to the actress, and the two instantly connected. Photographers at the event even captured the moment he handed Yeoh a pen so she could write down her phone number.
UK media outlets reported that Schumacher played cupid in helping Todt pursue a relationship with Yeoh, offering his friend tips on how to communicate better.
Despite their busy careers, the couple remained committed to each other
Todt revealed that he proposed to Yeoh just weeks after they started dating.
"We married after 6,992 days.
"A few weeks after we were together, we already committed. I already asked her to marry me," he shared.
The former Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) president said while both were occupied with work, he had also made a promise to Yeoh's father, Datuk Yeoh Kian Teik, to ask for her hand in marriage.
"Her father was an unbelievable person whom I loved. We promised we would get married, and we did," Todt said.
Throughout the interview, the current United Nations special envoy for road safety spoke fondly of his wife, even keeping track of the exact number of days they have spent together.
Reflecting on their relationship milestones, Todt said, "We got married after 6,992 days. It was due to happen. On 30 April, we celebrated 8,000 days since we first met in Shanghai."
