If you've been browsing Korean skincare lately, chances are you've come across products labelled PDRN
It's one of the latest ingredients making its way into serums, ampoules and sheet masks, with brands positioning it as skincare focused on supporting the skin barrier and recovery rather than simply targeting wrinkles.
But unlike many viral skincare ingredients, PDRN didn't originate in the beauty industry
Short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, PDRN is a purified mixture of DNA fragments traditionally extracted from salmon or trout DNA sources. Plant-derived alternatives also exist, including ginseng- and rose-derived versions.
PDRN has been studied in regenerative medicine, particularly for its potential role in tissue repair and wound healing. That medical research eventually led to PDRN being used in some aesthetic procedures, before skincare brands began incorporating it into topical products.
Scientists are interested in PDRN because research suggests it may support some of the biological processes involved in tissue repair. However, much of the stronger evidence comes from medical applications, while the evidence for PDRN creams and serums is still relatively limited.
If you're thinking of trying PDRN, it's probably best seen as a complement to your skincare routine
Consider it as an additional ingredient to complement an existing routine, rather than something that will transform your skin on its own.
Consistent sunscreen use, moisturising and evidence-backed ingredients such as retinoids or vitamin C still form the foundation of a good skincare routine.
In other words, PDRN is probably best viewed as an emerging skincare ingredient with promising early research, rather than a miracle ingredient that can replace proven skincare staples.
