A video of Malaysians offering to help carry heavy shopping bags for an elderly man has gone viral on social media
In the two-minute video published on the MR DIY's Facebook page, an old uncle can be seen almost falling while trying to move three bags of goods in front of the MR DIY PLUS store in Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur.
While the senior citizen stands idle on the spot to figure out how to carry the heavy bags, other shoppers quickly come forward to lend a hand.
"Are you waiting for your children?" asks a woman who is already holding two shopping bags and a canned drink.
"I think I can slowly walk over there. No issue," declines the elderly man, a typical paiseh response you would expect. But the woman insists on helping anyway.
Similar scenarios play out the same way with some 16 other groups of people of different races
Regardless of whether they initiate the conversation with the uncle in Bahasa Melayu, English, or Mandarin, they all show the intention to help him.
What strikes many viewers is that these good Samaritans also treat the uncle with patience and gentleness, as evident in their expressions and the questions they ask to ascertain if the uncle is okay.
Even an elderly aunty extends her help, inviting the uncle to place his bags into her shopping trolley and reassuring him that she would not steal his purchased items.
The video resonated with many Malaysians, garnering over one million views and 29,000 likes at the time of writing
"This is truly Malaysia," read a top comment.
"It shouldn't surprise us at all. At core, in our hearts, we are humans and Malaysians first above all else. Love... love my country!" wrote a Facebook user.
"Good job. Proud to be a Malaysian," one person commented, while another added, "Proud of our locals... (You) give us hope."
Thousands of comments cheered on the spirit of unity and Malaysians' readiness to help others.
In a statement to SAYS, MR DIY said the video was a social experiment aiming to showcase the kindness of Malaysians in conjunction with Hari Kebangsaan
"The two minute video, unveiled on 18 August 2023, demonstrates the compassion ingrained in Malaysian culture. Individuals of diverse ages step forward to aid the elderly man, reflecting unity and care that resonates deeply.
