The federal and Selangor governments have agreed to implement five major initiatives to immediately resolve worsening flash flood issues across the Klang Valley
During the tabling of the 2027 Budget, Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the government has allocated RM100 million to build new retention ponds and conduct thorough river maintenance, two critical steps designed to significantly reduce flood risks during heavy downpours.
Beyond short-term mitigation, both governments will undertake long-term structural evaluations
These include assessing the capacity and structural integrity of the Batu Dam and Klang Gates Dam over the next 30 years to ensure the reservoirs can handle future climate shifts and increased rainfall.
The joint effort follows repeated instances of urban flooding in low-lying residential areas across Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, where heavy afternoon storms often overwhelm local drainage networks within hours.
